Interview with George Patsouras

Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself, your background, interests, and how you came to be a digital artist?
First, I’d like to thank you for having me, means a lot to me as an artist. As for myself, I was born here in New York, USA, and art has always been my strongest passion. I came to be a digital artist shortly after I discovered this medium in my early teens; I was instantly hooked!
Do you believe in ‘talent’ or is just daily practice of drawing shapes and forms?
There’s no such thing as talent, only hard work and determination. It’s a lot like working out you could say; It requires a lot of practice and patience, and you get desirable results as long as you’re consistent with your program
What is your current job and what are the future plans?
I’m currently doing work for several video game companies as well as a few publishers, in addition to some freelance gigs. As for future plans, I’d like to continue doing what I’m doing now, in addition to expanding my skills with 3D programs as well.

Could you talk us through the process of producing one of your digital paintings describing it from an initial concept through to a finished piece?
I usually start off with collecting a variety of reference material to look at before I begin to draw or paint anything. When that’s done, I begin to sketch in the figures, which usually takes two layers – the first I concentrate on getting the gesture and anatomy right, the second for refinement. I don’t usually sketch in the background, as I prefer to think in shapes for that during the painting process. I also stress in values as opposed to colors during the initial phase, as this helps give a painting form and realism. Colors I like to focus on last.
