Interview with Jason Godbey
Hi could you tell us a bit about yourself?
I am 23 years old and I just graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a degree in social psychology. I never took any classes in 3D, I’m completely self-taught.
How long have you been in CG and what is your current job?
I have been doing CG for about three and a half years. I just graduated and I decided to take some time off just to relax and make a few more personal projects before going into the job field. I’m about to take a job in California, but unfortunately once I am employed I won’t have much time for my personal projects.
What is the reason of moving from Vue d’Espirit to 3ds max, have you found anything better in 3ds Max in comparison to Vue?
I was really limited using only Vue. Vue is great for landscapes, which is what I started out doing, but then I found myself doing a lot more environments with architecture in them. You can do environments with architecture in Vue too and I’ll go back and make one in that program every now and then, but mainly I wanted a program that was a little faster, had more options, and allowed for more realism. You can do tons more in Max, plus it supports Vray, but they are both great programs.
You only like to create only architectures or characters too?
Characters aren’t really my thing. I could do them if I wanted to, but I prefer environments. To me it’s cool being able to create my own worlds.
Of all of your artwork, which piece is your personal favorite and why?
It’s hard for me to pick a favorite. I get tired of my images really quickly because no matter how good I think it is I always think I can be doing better, but I’ll go ahead and mention two. “The Station” is an old Vue image. That was the image that started my interest in architecture and experimenting with textures. I like the mood in that one too.
Something more recent would be “Harsh Light of Day”. It came together really quickly and I like the mood. Both are kind of relaxing images.
