Interview with Jonathan Simard
Characters in your artwork are always different or say little bit scary and not as normal human being, there is any reason behind creating these types of characters?
Yes and no. I don’t really like to copy what’s real. I found that boring. I think it’s natural for me to design this kind of character. I like the idea to develop your little world of unique character. Give them personality make then alive. Hide some mystery in them, to exaggerate the proportion, sky the limit so you can do anything. I always tell myself that I could push more and more on the design.
If you could invent your dream job, where would you work & what would be your job title?
That’s a good one, because it’s a hot topic with one of my friend. :-) The dream job would be making my short movie and get paid for it. Seriously, I would really like to start a little studio. Make some commercial or other stuff. If I could win some money and build a render farm and work with faster computer. I would really like to work also on big cg feature film too, but I have to work more for a stronger portfolio.
Which area of 3d do your really enjoy doing?
Animation and modeling. These are the only fields in 3D that I really push myself. I do some texturing too, but it’s not a priority. These days I try to work more the composition and color, two areas that to much neglect.
What’s the most useful thing you have learnt in 3d?
When you render something, it’s never the final product (for me)! Thx god Photoshop exist. If you could only see how my render look like..ishhhhh. With Photoshop I can make all my color correction, add some texture, and give more or less contrast, work on the light and so mush more.
What is one piece of advice you would give to any artist looking to get into 3D?
I will tell something that worked for me. Let people judge your work and learn to accept it. I know it’s hard sometime and harder when it’s a comment from someone less experimented then you (yes, we’re human), but you can learn so much! Everyone have something to say, not always useful :-), but you can dig in a comment and came with improvement and new idea. It’s Evolution!
Are you working on any projects currently? If so, what are they?
Yes of course I working on a new picture right now, but it’s on a hold because sometime I have to get far from it and come back with fresh idea. It’s a mix between a clown and a squid with some weirdness :-). Also I worked with someone on more serious stuffs, but this one I will keep it secret for now :-).
Anything you like to add? It is your chance now to state your opinion about anything
Sure. 3D or 2D its not just about nice realistic renderer, warrior, big muscle, nice looking girl with big boobs or very real looking character, but don’t get me wrong I like that to and I admire those artist they are incredible, but there is so much crazy stuff that deserve recognition too. At the end, just have fun doing your art!
Thanks a lot Jonathan for taking out sometime for us from your busy schedule.
I thank you for this! It’s priceless for me! Thx again.
