Interview with Kyle Lambert
kyle lambert interview

Hi Kyle, could you tell us a bit about yourself and your background in CG?

kyle lambertHi Guys, Well I have a big background in traditional art. I spent most of my childhood and education drawing in pencil and learning to mix color and paint on canvas. As I headed to university my interest in technology lead me to become curious about how technology and art could combine to take my work further.

Please tell us about your current job and what motivates you?

I am currently self employed as a freelance illustrator, designer etc. I am in the process of gaining experience in the industry, working with other creative people and developing my own style as an artist.

I find inspiration in most things, whether that be an interesting person I meet, a funny experience, an imaginative photograph, a thought provoking lyric or a great story. My eyes are always open for something visually interesting.

What software program(s) and hardware do you use for your artwork?

I produce the majority of my work in Adobe Photoshop. Depending on what project I am working on, I will draw upon other applications to get the job done. For Motion Graphic pieces I use Motion from Final Cut Studio and After Effects and for 3D character animation I use Maya. All of my work is produced on my Mac Pro using a Wacom Cintiq 21UX and an Intuos Graphics Tablets.

What’s the reason of choosing mac over windows? Approx. more than 90% users use Windows and now windows is powerful too without blue screens. Windows programs also get faster updates in comparison to Mac.

I use a Mac because I find the overall experience more enjoyable. The operating system is so well thought through and has amazing functionality that improves how I work. Not having to worry about a virus attack and spyware is also nice ;)

The occasional delayed release from certain software companies can be a pain, but as the Mac user-base continues to grow I am sure these companies will work towards simultaneous releases.

How you think of a life without a graphic tablet?

If you mean for doing digital artwork, I would say that it would be a nightmare. I have done digital painting using a mouse and a track-pad and it is not recommended if you value your sanity.

If I woke up tomorrow and computers no longer existed, I don’t think that it would be long before I was happy again working with a pencil and paint. At the end of the day, technology just aids your creativity.

In your portfolio we can see lots of celebrities’ portrait and some of them are hyper realistic. Can you share the secret of painting realistic portraits?

There is no real ‘secret’ to painting realistic images. It is all about going that extra mile and spending time on each and every area of your image.

When painting realistically, the basics become very important. Getting the lighting right is essential because this determines how 3 dimensional the subject matter looks.

Another vital part, and probably the most difficult part of painting is to get the coloring accurate. Very often colors appear lighter to the eye than they really are and people will paint more cartoony images because of this. The most important thing is to spend more time looking at what you are painting and less time presuming.
