Interview with La Main des Maitres Team

How much time you guys taken to complete this short film from initialization to finalization?
Looky : It is about one year of production and few months of preproduction.
CaYuS : During the preproduction, we have done a “test shot”. It was one shot of the movie (the first one), done from the beginning to the end, with the tools and the techniques we planned to use in the movie. Like this, we could see if it worked and if we would be able to finish the movie in time. But the result was too long, and it was not as good as it had to be. By the way, we wanted to do it anyway, trying to do it better and faster.
This short film participated in any festival yet and how’z the response?
Looky: For the moment, we mainly have feedbacks from a passionate public, and those are very good. As our first goal of making a movie is to do it for the public, we are very happy of this welcoming. By the way, wining some awards could help us to make it profitable (laugh).
CaYuS : The short participated in little festivals and we won an animation award in TOTI festival (Slovenia). We are now waiting the big festivals like Siggraph, Annecy... and we'll see!
Clément: We lost the festival of Draguignan (France) thank you for the reminder (laugh).
Which software you guys used in the making of this short film? And what’s the reason of choosing those?
Looky: About me, I mainly used for the matt paintings, animation fixing and facial animations... and a lot of other things... Photoshop. This software I used to work to already before school and I could not imagine work with another one. After I helped myself with Maya about some perspectives for the matt paintings and the facial projections... it was easier than a facial tracking in AfterFX.
Clément: Well, we actually did not have the choice, we used the software available at school. We used after effects for compositing and Maya for 3D (we 've been instructed at school). We also used Bodypaint for textures because you can draw on the 3d mesh, which saves you a lot of time and Houdini for VFX, but CaYuS will tell you more about it.
CaYuS: I love this software ! I personally wanted to use Houdini for some VFX (Blood, smoke, rigid bodies...). That's a software I learned during my internship in “la maison”, a french VFX company. It's definitely amazing to play with it; you really can do whatever you want with their nodal philosophy. Moreover, SideFX just released the Apprentice HD version when we started the project. That was my Christmas present... thanks SideFX ;)
