Interview with Patrick Conaty

Which area of 3d do your really enjoy doing and why?
Compositing. What I love about compositing is the ability to have so much control over the final output of a given image sequence. Working with lighting, color and quality, depth and motion are all a lot of fun. I also have a bit of a background in photography and used to spend endless hours in Photoshop perfecting and manipulating photos, and so the compositing process is similar in a lot of ways. But I also really enjoy modeling because it lets you use a different part of your brain whereas your more focused on form as well as silhouette. It’s also a lot more personal than other cg mediums because you’ve got a virtual object in front of you, which you have total control over. The editing process in modeling can be much more direct and fast, whereas with compositing it’s more about the process and problem solving.
What is one piece of advice you would give to any artist looking to get into 3D?
Well I’m not sure what the best piece of advice is, but for me its was challenging myself to be constantly inspired by something. Not particularly the success of someone or some company, but from other things besides cg like music, photography, animation, movies etc… I think it’s important to always be open to all kinds of new things and let the combination of it all inspire and help shape new ideas. For me, music and audio play an important role in the cg creative process. I’m always trying to visualize the music I listen to and find new ways to for sound to exemplify visual or vise versa.
What are you plans for the future in terms of your career?
I would eventually like to work my way up to a vfx supervisor role, as I’ve always loved working with a team of people as well as discussing and critiquing art. From my past work and school experience so far, I think my eye is already developing and it should only hopefully get better with time and new projects I work in the future.
Are you working on any projects currently? If so, what are they?
At this exact moment I’m doing absolutely nothing. I have a lot of half crafted ideas in mind but have been so busy with the demo reel and school for the last 14 months. Now that I’m free again I’m sure the ideas will start flowing and I’ll begin work on something interesting soon enough. After experiencing first hand the amount of time involved in creating a short cg piece on my own, I’m more interested in a small collaboration between a few friends, not only for efficiency, but to influence and be influenced by new ideas, techniques and processes.
Anything you like to add? It is your chance now to state your opinion about anything.
My opinion on anything? That’s a lot of power…
Thanks a lot Patrick for taking out sometime for us from your busy schedule.
