CGArena, iZ3D and MTBS is proud to present “Wacky Video Game Characters” 3D Challenge, 29 July 2008 - 10 Aug 2008.
Winners will be rewarded With Special Prizes From iZ3D, AMD, and Epic Games.
This is your chance to take your virtual 3D art, and let people see it in TRUE 3D!
Stereoscopic 3D (S-3D) refers to the ability to display true volumetric 3D content through 2D media. Examples include explosions that pop out of the screen, and a sense of depth that makes players think they can reach inside the game. S-3D technology is quickly becoming the equipment of choice for avid gamers and has already shown as much as 3:1 revenue benefits over 2D theaters in the Hollywood cinema space with films like Beowulf 3D, Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D, and U23D.
Your Mission
More likely than not, your work is being rendered in volumetric 3D that is shown on a 2D display. This contest is focused on stereoscopic 3D which means your images are shown on true 3D media including 3D monitors, HDTVs, projection screens, and more. To accomplish this, you will need your CG art submitted as two unique images that were captured from two different camera or viewpoint positions. Artwork can feature lone characters or characters on landscapes etc.
To help the artists more
Meant to be Seen (mtbs3D.com) has written quick guides to help CG artists convert and/or capture their images in stereoscopic 3D. Guides are available in two parts Beginners and Advanced
How the challenge will be run
This challenge will be a WIP (Work in Progress) Challenge. Each challenger is required to submit Work In Progress (WIP) images, from start to the final render, to the post production on regular intervals. The purpose is that everyone can learn from each other, offer feedback and critiques.
1. Enter the Challenge by registering yourself on CGArena forum - Name: Country << Register Here >>
2. Submit your work in progress images in the forum on a regular basis.
3. Participate in the community by critiquing other challenger's works in the respective threads. You can also participate with mtbs3D.com's forums and ask their members to try your developing images on stereoscopic 3D equipment.
4. You are allowed to use any 3d software for the creation of artwork. Premade/Ready-made models are allowed to use. Ready-made models will require original artist permission to submit. Please declare your graphics sources when submitting artwork (e.g. self created, ready-made, etc.).
5. You have to submit 2 images (left and right camera - Read the Guides) must be in a minimum 1680 X 1050 resolution (16:10 aspect ratio) and in full color.
6. Submit the side by side image as a 24 bit BMP file (zipped) by emailing "s3d (at) cgarena.com". If there is any problem in S-3D image then MTBS reserves the right to fix that image.
7. You have until the late evening of 12th Aug 2008, in the PST.
8. You are allowed to use any type of post- production in the final image to make artwork better and richer.
9. There will be 3 top prizes and 4 runner-ups. If the judges don't like any submitted images, then there will only be runner ups.
10.
Respected Judges - iz3D and MTBS will finalize and announce the winners till 22nd August 2008. |
Note - If you want to use any jpeg image as a background then apply the texture on the plane and render in 3D with the scene objects, otherwise S-3D image looks horrible and you will be disqualified.
Tip - If you are confused after reading everything then in simple terms create a 3d image like you have done it before, except when rendering, render with two camera's and distance between them at around 2.5 inches (consider your 2 eyes as 2 cameras)
