Video modeling of a full character: Nierd

Postby ashras99 » 16 Feb 2006, 02:46

Total time is 3h25, for 9 files. I hope you will like them and help you in learning 3D

All videos are in Divx 6 codec and the total file size is... 935Mb ;)

Credit for all these videos goes to Thomas Roussel, www.eovia3d.net

The modeling of the head. Everyting was done in edge modeling, using the symmetry with instance. Tools used a lot: edge extrusion, bridge, target weld, tweak, soft selection...Only the head accessories of the character. I used a lot the Dynamic Geometry, with the thickness and the bridge tool.

Still a lot of edge modeling/extrusion, and some tesselation. The difficulty here was the connection for the two arms together, and the muscle flow. I always model "female" bodies and it's hard for me to do muscle "male"...
The topology was also cleaned with the dissolve and some reconstruction. Thanks to the advanced selection mode of Hex (non quads, etc..)

The end of the torso with the back. Still a lot of edge extrusions, target weld, bridge and tweak! For the hands, I began in Box modeling to have the proportions, but I finished in edge modeling. The legs were more difficults than I thought. The muscle flow was harder to create, I had less references for this part (Hey, bodybuilders, post more photos of your legs ;) Still edge modeling and the same tools. For the feet, I changed the technic and did it in box modeling. After doing the connection between the leg and the foot, I felt that something was missing... another toe. It will be added in another video. At the beginning of the project, I thought about modeling two tails. But while modeling, I started to dislike the design of these two tails, then, I added two other small ones
Only polygon extrusion, with variable radius, and at the end, for the master tail, I did a multiple extrusion for the kind of arrows/picks.
Also, at the beginning of the video, some tweaks on all the body, to make the muscles less sharp-edged and visible.

I added some accessories, like the pants (hey, it's the same as Hulk! ) For these accessories, I used the offset tool, which is great when you want to create clothes in a couple of seconds! You will also notice that the last foot finger has been added in this video.

All the videos are now on the new server, and everything should be ok ;)

ashras99: please, can you send to the thread itself, and not the video directly, because if the move one day, all your links will be broken..

I hope you will like my videos !

Thanks !

Welcome lecaramel, on your request direct link of your forum is also added. I dont think any reason of not link the videos directly, because much easier for anyone to get all the links, and we will update as you.

sorry that is Hexagon 1.2 used. Moving in the right section.

But another problem is videos are OpenDML AVI. so dont know which player will play. Anyone have a idea then please post.

Check >> OpenDML AVI files are AVI files with the specs extended to accomodate certain improvements, such as bigger files. However, the specs have been pushed to the limit in order to also accomodate the insertion of embedded soft subs in these files. It is considered an abomination by some people, so while MPlayer will play audio and video tracks from such files just fine, the makers refuse to implement functionality that will render the embedded subs.

If I remeber, it's just a divx or xvid codec I used, nothing "excentric".
The best way to watch almost all the avi movies is to use vlc (www.videloan.org), for mac, PC, linux, etc.

The links are up (just a wrong move on my serveur) and even if it has been modeled in Hexagon, you can do exactly the same in 3DSMax (except some specific feature. But the way you do the edge modeling, cuts and target weld is the same.
