Pool weathering...

Postby k2k » 19 Jun 2006, 23:48

First attempt to paint the 8k pool texture with some tiles removed etc.

I think I will add some more stuff to this texture but I don’t want it looking “too old”: the water is no more in the pool only for 2 or 3 weeks

I have also done some aging work on the fence in the background: maybe the geometry of the top seems now too sharp… I think I will add dirt to the base of this fence as well… if I have the time to do it of course… :?

As always c&c welcome!

You mean the stormy clouds?
At the beginning I thought I was a good idea: I want a scene just after the rain with the first sun rays appearing... But now you are right: the fence is lower than the concrete wall I had in first versions and the background lacks of definition… Maybe I have too add some trees in the far background… What do you think?

Good idea! I will certainly change the background in post-prod... My problem is still the same: if I want to render my image in a big resolution (definitely after the deadline  ) I have to use huge textures and backgrounds (for the background it will be easier though as I can add some fog/depth of field… )

What's the render time for this image (up).

I spent some time to find "optimized" settings with fR in the first days of the challenge for my posts
With the Dynamic Bitmap Pager on (which prevents my PC from crashing when loading my huge texture maps at the render time but slows the render) the scene renders in 25 min (15 min with pre-rendered solution, equivalent to the irradiance map in vray) at 1600x1100 on a dual xeon @ 2.8 Ghz with 3Gig of RAM

U should try this.Select each side of pool and set different mat id's.Then make multi-sub-object material with 5 materials in it(or 4 because one side is not visible ).Then u put your tile texture in ps and make 5 (or 4) variations(one for each side).

I tried this method too… but for max, loading a multi-sub material with 4 4k texture maps or loading only one material with a 8k texture map is the same (that seems logic) and with the way I wanted my pool to be unwrapped (with normalized UVs) I have chosen the second way as the UV space is used as well as in the first and the texture is easier painted in Photoshop… I had only to learn how to use the Dynamic Bitmap Pager… but I would also have to use it with your method...

I am just angry because of the time I had to spend to figure out how this could work properly with 7 or 8 blue screens last evening...

Then resize your texture in ps.U don't need 4k texture map.

I want to render the finished image in 6k resolution :)
(The front side of the pool takes the half of the image and with the texture 33% bigger that it appears in the image = 4k texture :( )
All this to print my image on an A1 format... and as scaling down a texture is quite easy than making it bigger...

Pool looks great! And fence does too! Only it's a little weird that it's only dirty at the top?! Maybe randomize that a little... and yeah, the sky. Everything in your picture looks great and defined, and your sky pales in comparison. It's just flat and doesn't do much for the overall picture. Like woskar said, maybe a picture for the background where the sky and clouds would be more defined?! I'm enjoying seeing your progress! Keep it up!

Christopher, about the fence, do you mean put more dirt here and there? In fact for the moment the dirt “comes only from the sky”…

So there are the suggested corrections: I added some dirt to the bottom of the fence and to the concrete parts of the pool …

I am also quite happy with my “new” diving board that I changed after a friend of mine told me it reminds him of too many video games… as the autumn challenge is fun but not a game I tried to do something different…

(Something strange happens with the ladder material… :!: :?: )

Wow. some excellent work. I'm just wondering that if it's such a cloudy day, would the shadows be so well defined?
