Hi Mat!

All I can say is that you've my vote...

Your work seems a lot like a painting... nice!!! Maybe you can after do some tweaks in the lights... with more time and less pressure...

Be well my friend!

Hi! mat so it's ur first masterpiece :) , I like almost everything in ur scene blackboard maam, benches washbasin and lights too, I think the teacher is so scary that many students don't want to attend her class, anyway the floor of the room is little awkward for me, but finally ur scene is too good and ur definitely coming in the finally selected images for voting. Good luck and hope a lot more fantastic stuff(artistic  ) from ur side.

Hi Drave and thanks a lot!
It's not a masterpiece, just a simple render, but thanks for your kind words and support!
The floor is very nordic, typical to older buildings from a few decades ago where heaavy thick planks are used to cover the floor. You can still see many of this kinds around here because people try to keep it this way!
Actually tree is the main construction material for buildings in all northern countries.
There are so many strong and terrific entries in the challenge I think the judge panel will have a tough time choosing the final nominies!

Hi bustedgame and SMaloney!
Here is the pictorial you asked for! I hope it helps!

We need a couple of "docking stations" first, so lets create two poly planes with 2 by 2 subdivisions. Picture 1
then create an EP curve snapping the first Cv on one of the head polys. picture 2
next cv point snapped to the center of the first utility poly plane. picture 3
last cv snapped to the second poly plane. picture 4
press enter and your first curve is created. don't worry about part of the curve penetrating the head, we will fix that later.
Now create as many curves you need around the left side of the head, the more the better, all with just three cv's.
Now choose every single curve, one by one, and up the number of the cv's, using the rebuild curve function. They should all have the same number of settings.
since all curves has ended at the same place, which is the center of the second poly plane, we can choose the last cv of all curves altohether by entering the component mode. then pick-walking up the curve using the up arrow key, we can modify group of cv's together! using move, scale and even rotate! the very first cv's which are snapped to the head itself, should remain untouched. I scaled up the secound group of the cv's )from top) to bring out the hidden part of the curves out of the head. picture 5
We won't be needing poly planes now, they can be deleted.
As an example, I upped the number of cv's even more (in picure 6), to demonstrate how easy it can be to achieve any form you want.
when finished forming the curves, group them all and mirror it to the other side!
Happy modeling!

:D

Hi bustedgame!
Nurbs or curves in general are very powerful and ofter an overlooked part of the 3d packages! You should really start using them as modeling aids as much as possible!
more tuts will sure be coming!

Be well!

Thanks a lot mat for that little tutorial. Very clear and easy to understand. However I dont know what to do after that last step. I have no experience with making hair in maya, so how do you get the curves to make the actual hairs? Thanks!

I have seen people use poly modeling more often then Nurbs ........ Max also have nurbs but I didn't get much information about nurbs in max ......... once I was modeling a glass for the shades ....... I started with poly but found it a lot time consuming ..... so I thought of trying nurbs ......... and wow I made it not more than 2 minutes ......... but I think the mixture of everything is best to use .......... and wat matters is the result ....... I think nurbs are good for organic modeling than non - organic items .............. wats ur opinion mat ??
