2D challenge: Johanna Haikonen: Finland

Postby mirenwe » 19 Apr 2007, 08:17

Hi everyone! One more joining the challenge. In my nightmare concept I wanted to take a different point of view: a nightmare of a troll. When people see nightmares they see things of darkness, but when a troll, thing of darkness itself, sees nightmares, they are quite different.

So let's have fun teasing the troll! Putting some faerie folks, butterflies and whatever i can think of in the cave later. Here is an early sketch, sized down quite a bit.

Nice to join this event with you all. Hope i can learn a lot new things in here.

First update. I wanted to emphasize the troll and make the cave smaller for a more dramatic view. The position of the troll is remade so that he looks more scared. I will have much trouble with the light sources, there are so many, but hopefully someone will tell me if they look weird or something. Only details this far are on the face, next concentrating on the other parts.

I got the idea for this subject from an old, Finnish children's song, where a troll meets a fairy and falls in love with her, but they cannot live together because the fairy withers in the dark cave and troll cannot appear in the light and the sight of her hurts his eyes. Also in the LOTR saga trolls cannot appear in the light because they turn into stone. This is why I made my troll's nightmare a bunch of bright-lighted fairies and flowers and all sort of nice things that trolls hate. Just wanted to make an insight into my head if someone wondered what was going on in the concept introduction thread :)

Today I'm going to try a new idea on the scene. I was thinking of turning the light sources into lamps, torches, candles and whatever human-made light sources. I think it would add more nightmare-like feeling on the painting. The troll in the painting is very much a creature of the night and he probably fears more humans and their lights than fairies. And lamps and such would work as good symbols for human, so that you couldn't be quite sure which one he is more afraid of: humans or light. Still, I'm not sure what would work best. Even the undefined light sources might work. What do you others think? A long and messy thought here, but bare with me >.<

This is what I had in mind. Sketched roughly some lightsources into the picture. Also some new reflections and more color.

I decided that the troll is going to be changing into stone because there is so much light. Poor creature! I really feel sorry for him, have to remind myself that this is only a dream for him, soon he'll wake up with a nice trollgirl on his side :) Not much has happened, but made a little more detail and something more to the environment. Also removed the pink light-source.

More stone texture. Looking still a bit plastic, but working on making it better.

I like your progress on the detail of the troll, looking forward to seeing more refined versions of it.

Also on your second image that you posted I liked the interaction of the light from the candle on the troll's hand, you should try getting that back on the recent one because, you kind of lost a little bit.

Otherwise, you are going well Good Luck.

Thanks for the comment vshen. Noticed it myself too. I'm no expert in painting stone textures, just practising it. If I can't make it work I can always go back and dump the whole stone idea.

Some update... experiments on the texture and a little tuning here and there. Nothing much. Ty for encouragement pegahoul :) Tried to find something different as there were so many great nightmare concepts from ppl on the thread already.

Really nice concept! (the song is not Päivänsäde ja Menninkäinen by any chance is it? I love that one!)
It should be a lot of fun ( and also highly challenging) to work with so many different lightsources.
