Hi bustedgame and SMaloney!
Here is the pictorial you asked for! I hope it helps!
We need a couple of "docking stations" first, so lets create two poly planes with 2 by 2 subdivisions. Picture 1
then create an EP curve snapping the first Cv on one of the head polys. picture 2
next cv point snapped to the center of the first utility poly plane. picture 3
last cv snapped to the second poly plane. picture 4
press enter and your first curve is created. don't worry about part of the curve penetrating the head, we will fix that later.
Now create as many curves you need around the left side of the head, the more the better, all with just three cv's.
Now choose every single curve, one by one, and up the number of the cv's, using the rebuild curve function. They should all have the same number of settings.
since all curves has ended at the same place, which is the center of the second poly plane, we can choose the last cv of all curves altohether by entering the component mode. then pick-walking up the curve using the up arrow key, we can modify group of cv's together! using move, scale and even rotate! the very first cv's which are snapped to the head itself, should remain untouched. I scaled up the secound group of the cv's )from top) to bring out the hidden part of the curves out of the head. picture 5
We won't be needing poly planes now, they can be deleted.
As an example, I upped the number of cv's even more (in picure 6), to demonstrate how easy it can be to achieve any form you want.
when finished forming the curves, group them all and mirror it to the other side!
