Challenge: Grant Moore - Canada

Postby grantmoore3d » 29 Jul 2008, 14:24

Hey everyone! Just got tipped off about this contest and your forum as well! I'm excited to try out my hand at some stereoscopic images! It's a rather short time-frame, but I think I can come up with something interesting!

Totally agree very short time frame but then we able to learn how to meet the deadlines, isn't it. :-)

Okay, so I've got an idea for the image.

The idea is to create a mock-up of what a first person fantasy game might look like, bit in high detail. Think Oblivion mixed with WoW. Now, to have a truly interesting 3D experience, wouldn't it be great if when enemies attack you, their attacks actually "came at you" through the screen. Incorporating stereo into games like these would draw the gamer in so much more.

So, the image I will create will be an Oger/Orcish beast, thrusting a spear out of the screen, attacking the player. I also have another "secret" idea, but I'm not going to reveal that right now for fear of someone else stealing my idea!

So, there you have it, I will make up a sketch some time today/tomorrow (though it will probably look like a child drew it). Excited to get going on it!!

Alright, I s#$@s at drawing, but this is the basic idea of what I'm going to create. Obviously the spear will be coming out of the screen and everything else will be in the far distance (looking far away).

I'm not entirely sure I like the pose, so I'll probably do some quick pose mock-ups next, until I find one I'm satisfied with.

These are two renders of the character I had prior to this contest.

Basically I had finished modeling, texturing using SSS shader and had started rigging using muscle systems. Right now, I'm finishing up the body/facial rigging, making some slightly better textures (scars, better tattoos), body hair/fur and giving him a loin cloth to cover his... well, lack of manliness.

So the next update should probably be late tomorrow (my time anyways).

Here are a couple pose-tests I did to make sure the body rigging was working properly. There are some errors in some of the movements, but for the most part I'm satisfied with it for the time being.

Also, sorry for the last post and the MASSIVE images, I forgot to re-size them before posting... I hate when people do that :P

Wow:) nice character. but don't you think that there's sth wrong with upper torso? I am talking about shoulders area mainly. The biceps muscle is where the shoulder should be, and it looks like he doesn't have armpits. Or maybe i'm just carping at those:P

I didn't see that before, thanks for pointing it out!!

This is my first attempt at doing something with "proper" anatomy, so it's bound to have a ton of mistakes in it.

The best way to check if everything is fine - look into a mirror (without T-Shirt loooool :P), move your arm and see how it is build. seemingly your anatomy won't differ from Ogre's hehehe .

Cheers, keep it up

jasiu : Sweet! Thanks for that link, those images will be extremely useful next time I'm modeling a character.

So, here's my latest update, basically I just did some minor fixes on the textures and finished the facial rig, and added some teeth/gums. Not going to bother with a tongue. I might be able to get the body hair done tonight, but that depends on how late I want to stay up.
