I used max 8 hair and fur tool. its only available in max 8 and not in any of tha earlier versions. i used the "green grass preset" and edited the properties.. density and others to acheive the look i needed.

The last time I tried to use Maya fur to do grass, it crashed spectacularly!! I guess Max has a better way of handling it.
