hydroponics garden

Postby chaitanyak » 28 Sep 2006, 04:03

i was watching an old episode of Star Trek: Voyager, and saw their hydroponics garden in the ships cargo bay. This got me to look at gardens from a different perspective.

my sketch is of a hydroponics garden where all the plants are grown in special containers, with nutrient solutions instead of soil, and electronically controlled custom atmospheres for each plant. this could be on a spaceship, or a new colony on some other planet, or an underground bunker in a post nuclear holocaust earth... or in some agrophobic gardener's basement.

some interesting hydroponics links i found:

what is hydroponics- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydroponics
hydroponics in antarctica- http://www.antarctichydroponics.com/

This reminds me of a cross between Poison Ivy of Batman, and the eerie tests conducted in the Doom3 game. Beautiful concept.

Yes, ambitious project, but if you work hard on it, it could turn out really awesome! Best of luck!

hmm

the plants won't be completely submerged, the roots will be in "nutrient solution" instead of mud. once i have some refrence images, i'll have an idea what thats supposed to look like. The plants will be enclosed in their own containers, so they can have their own little atmospheres.

a bit like this: http://www.doctorgreenfingers.co.uk/How ... e%202.html
