Making of The Cordoba Mosque by Luis Tejeda, Spain

“The Cordoba Mosque” was a project I did for an interiors rendering competition. With this work I won the first place.

Before I started I compiled all the reference pictures I was finding online plus the ones I took myself. Because the Mosque is so big inside with so many rich elements, one of the goals was to feature some of them in two images.

I didn’t have a floor plan of the Mosque available to start working so using one of the reference images I began modeling and placing the columns. The capitals and other details I left for last. First was the placement of the columns and the camera to have a viewpoint similar to the image. I then added the walls and other objects to the scene cover up some of the space in the distance. This helped me stay within the contest timeframe.

All the elements were built from cubes and converted to editable poly to continue the modeling.

I did two different types of arcs to use along the scene. I used unwrapping to have more control of the dirt and imperfections when working in Photoshop.

Something I learned with the time was to model the objects in separate files and save them with their corresponding names. It’s then much easier to import the files to the principal scene and then merge them.

One of the most complicated parts of this project was simulating the age and wear on the columns, especially on the black ones where it was more noticeable. To achieve this, I used a bump map to simulate scratches and other abrasions.
