The idea for this image came from a vision that the psychologist C.G.Jung described in his autobiography memories, dreams and reflections and it was so vividly described that the image came as perfect inspiration for the Garden challenge here at CGArena. And I also won the First prize which includes licensed version of Corel Painter IX.5, RealViz MMTrack, GPUTech RTSquare and HDRI skies from Hyperfocal Design.
Since I had not too much time to work in the image because of my regular job, I had to have a very clear idea of the composition and the elements, usually I make a 2d sketch but this time I did a very rough 3d sketch, even if I am just starting with the image, I already wanted to start playing with the lighting to have a clearer idea on each step on how the final image might look like.
The tree is from the xfrog libraries, and most of the modelling is very basic shapes, boxes, rendereable splines, cylinders etc. In car I took out the wheels and most of the details and just left the exterior of it, I added a displacement modifier with a dirt texture. And some noise.
Texturing: This is one the part of the process that I enjoy the most, because its were you can put as many details as you want without having to overload your scene with polygons, since I had to get this done very fast I had to get the textures as fast as I could. For example the buildings, for them after the modelling I added some basic textures and I rendered them from the front view with only a skylight in Mental Ray as shown in the building on the left, after that, I take that render into Photoshop and using some of the images from different texture sets and with different blending modes I started painting on them.
