Making of It's my Garden
by Leslie Pere, USA

I have created this image for CGArena Garden challenge in which I won the second prize ($867 worth of prizes) and was sponsored by some biggest companies in this field like Corel, Realviz, GPU-Tech, Hyperfocal Design and ambientLight.

I’ve used various softwares to create the garden scene but main softwares was Xfrog and 3dsmax. I started modeling the plants in XFrog 3.5. Depending on what kind of plant I want to achieve, I found modeling plants in XFrog easier and faster then Max. Not to mention XFrog allows me to tweak stuff much faster.

So as first step, the base stem and the top was created in Xfrog and Then I added various leaf-like curly stuff to the sides.

Finally the top segment was created. As you can see I also added some basic color shading to the various parts. I find texturing in Max is much more robust and precise then in XFrog, therefore I did all the texturing in Max.

Because I wanted to apply textures to the leaves, I used the “Render UVW Template” in the UnwrapUVW editor to export the outline of the leaves. Then in Photoshop I painted various leafy textures, which were applied via the UnwrapUVW modifier.
