Making of Lexus on the Road

In 3ds max viewport you are going to see only the yellow marks but to explain it better I wrote the point creation numbers and the distance between them, but remember as I told you before, these marks don’t have any relation with the background photo.

For our next step we are going to the menu “Utilities” and select “Camera Match” to see the following window:

As you already realized, the screenshot that I showed you above is fairly simple and very intuitive, after we select a point in the list, you click at “Assign Position” and on viewport you define the same 6 points again but this time you put them in the real photo, with that you´re saying to 3ds max that those green points on the photo are those 6 yellow points that we created before and with mix of both a camera will be created almost on the same position of the real camera used, mine viewport is looking like that after this step:

In a project where you shot the picture these points would be very precise because you would know exactly the distance between them but here we are simulating their distance, at this example I put all of them 2 meters from each other, after you click at “Create Camera” a new camera will be created but as I told you before it won’t be perfect because we are only estimating the real distance between the points so we need to do some adjustments at our camera to help us achieving the right position. I created a plane covering the road, so we can check if the perspective is ok like in the next screenshot:

From now on we can start importing 3d objects to our scene and they are going to be at the right position, if you are having problems bringing the car try with something simpler first like a cube or even our old friend teapot. With the car in the viewport is looking like:

At this point I think that you are bit scared with this “camera match” stuff but believe me, it’s much more difficult to achieve this result with a manual (try and error) attempts.
