Making of A Winter Amid the Ice
by Guillaume JOBST Web: www.guillaume-j.com

This texture is also used for the ground of the image. For the snow/ice transition below, you can see the ice shader on the left, the snow shader on the right, all laid out in the blend shader with a mask made of landscape material :-)

The peaks shader on the side of the image is a little different, it’s more reflecting. I chose a simple raytrace shader and I added to it a layer of snow, in the same way I did for the boat, in order to add some volume. In addition, I reworked the mesh afterwards so as to add some tiny icy peaks and some more irregularities. Some touching up was done during post-production in Photoshop. I preferred to polish the small details this way, rather than spending hours with the vertex ;)

I won’t detail too much the boat textures because these are very conventional: spread map, bump, specular and a shader based on displace to manage the ice on the back sail. Nothing complicated really. A translucency shader for the sails and there you have it :-)

Once the scene is finished, I render the usual various passes (occ, shades, etc.) and I composit the whole in Photoshop. A small addition: I add some grain to the image with an overlay texture on the whole composition (paper texture) so as to add some irregularity in the rendering and to make it look less like raw 3D which I’m not very fond of ;) This also helps emphasizing the snowy effect of the image.

These were the main steps I went through to create the image A Winter Amid the Ice. I hope you’ll enjoy it… Do not hesitate to contact me should you have any further questions
