I created this image to illustrate the short story written by Jules Verne when he was young: A Winter Amid the Ice. My first idea was a rather simple composition with a boat starting to be frozen by the ice, and in the background, lost in the blizzard, a small group of explorers on their way to save their fellow who went missing in this unfriendly land. :-)
I started from several visual references (see below) of historical boats, and frozen landscapes. I started a simple modelling of the boat with the Max basic tools: polygons, loft and patch grid for the sails, as well as a spline network + surface modifier for the hull. Nothing complicated in fact :-) See the image below.
Then I lay the main volumes in a Max scene, very simply, just to get an idea of the 3D image composition (based on a sketch and the visual references).
Once the scene is set, I begin detailing the various elements: the ice, the snowy peaks etc. Still using the basic tools (cut edge, edge connect, and a smooth).
