Making Of Balcón Mediterráneo by David Vercher, Spain Web: www.davidvercher.es

To create wax material I've used the Maya Blinn where I have set the Mental Ray attributes for better translucency, for the leaf carved detail of the capital I have used a displacement map created in ZBrush.

Lighting - I used Mental Ray Physical Sun and Sky, in each picture I have tilted the sun to get two different times of the day, one afternoon and one evening.

In the setting with candles I have used two Mental Ray spherical area lights with raytrace shadows and quadratic decay because it’s the most real. These are the render settings:

As an output image format I have used hdr in the primary buffer, set to Float 3x32 bit RGB/Channel, I have ruled out the alpha channel because I'm using the background color of the physical sky. For camera settings I have used a mia exposure simple lens, with the gamma value set to 1 for the final render.

I've rendered an ambient occlusion pass, with a fractal texture connected to it in the dark attribute, to use it as dirt, also  z-depth pass has been render.

Compositing - I always like to go over the images with an external tonemapper, for this case I've used Photomatix, it has Reinhard integrated on it, frequently used in Vray, this allow me to have a better control over the brights, shadows and colours.

Finally, I've pass the images through After Effects, where I have composed the ambient occlusion layer, I've added some color correction, blur and lens flare. Thanks for looking, I hope you liked it, you can see more work examples or ask me any doubt at www.davidvercher.es
