Hi everyone, I'm Soroosh Ghaffarian, a 3D artist. In this tutorial, I'm going to share my knowledge on how I modeled and rendered Mercedes-Benz CLS 550.
First of all, as far as the modeling of cars and vehicles are concerned, it’s really important to gather variety of references and right blue-prints. It’s not a difficult process but it shouldn’t be rushed. I found blueprints which were pretty accurate, so there was no need to squeeze or skew them in order to make the views align better. If you’re keen on having my number of pictures that I’ve seen to model my car, I should say I’ve collected more than 100 references.Below, there are some photos which have been used in my modeling.
As I wanted to start collecting pictures, I thought that one of the best sources would be appealing from the Benz Company, so decided to email them but at the end of the day I was replied: “we haven't any Image of this car model, you can find Images just from the Internet with search in Google or other search engine.” That's life, well, so I started googling them though.
Ok, let’s start modeling. At the first,I set up the blueprints in Maya, I’m sure there are plenty of tutorials on the net explaining how to set up it, so I’m not going to mention it again. But please keep in mind that the right measurement is the most important thing when you want to model a car. So you need to find a right blue-print and perfectly adjust it inside Photoshop, before starting the modeling. If you do not get it right, your model would look a bit odd.
My chosen modeling technique was polygon modeling. Started modeling by a simple plane and then variety of tools, such as Extrude, Insert edge, delete edge, Merge vertex, Split polygon tool and etc. it’s final shape nothing too smart. In my mind, polygon modeling is lovely because it's very easy to create what you’re imagining to make, solving its problems and finding the solution is easy.
For modeling a car, it's vital to look carefully to all blueprints and references, and you need to consider the position of each point and line towards its angels in the space, it must be so accurate; otherwise the model would not have a nice shape and form. As a result, the final render would be so jerky, and reflections would not be clear. As always, the most challenging problem is to get the overall shape just right.
