Making of Ferrari F2 500 by Ishak Khan, Singapore Portfolio: ishakkhan.cgarena.com

making ferrari 500 f2

Hi all. My name is Ishak Khan; I’m a 20 year old visual effects student from Singapore, currently in my final year. I have always love Ferrari cars be it the new ones or the old ones. So, during my 2 weeks break I decided to make a Ferrari F2 as part of my modeling reel. I still have a long way to go to be considered a good modeler, but I hope this model will steer me to do better works in the future. I am only going to show you the modeling and texturing aspects of this project, and hope you guys will like it.

Getting Started

Compile as much reference materials you can find on the internet or if the object you want to model is near you, photograph it. This will be really helpful when you model. You can also look at CGArena References Gallery or References Section in forum. Here, I gathered a blueprint and used it as my image planes.

Modeling

Before I start modeling, I would like to share a very basic thing while modeling hard surface objects. The closer 2 lines are to each other; the sharper the edge will be when smoothed. Most hard surfaces around us have a beveled or creased surface at the sides; we use this method to mimic the creases we see in real life.

shape integrity

The integrity of the shapes holds better with supporting edges.

While modeling automotives, I usually like to start with the tires, because it is the most prominent feature of any automobile. Without it, the car can’t move. So I started with what seems to be the simplest object and continued from there.

Here, I created a series of spokes for the car wheels. First model 1 spoke, than move the pivot to the centre and use the duplicate special command. To make it revolve around, I use this method…

360 divided by 16 (number of spokes you want) equals to 22.5 (degree in rotation). Type those numbers and the spokes will revolve around. I do the same for further spokes at the back. Rotate the back layer of spokes a little bit so that it will show more prominently.
