Making of Ferrari F2 500 by Ishak Khan, Singapore Portfolio: ishakkhan.cgarena.com

You can continue extruding the car body, with reference to the image plane. Extrude and delete the faces where the tire mechanism and exhaust are so that they will fit in.

extrude

Once you get the basic shape out, you can extract and add on to the features of the car and model out the detail. Here I did the interior and model some of the features in it. Be sure to delete the inner faces, faces that cannot be seen by the camera to save your poly-count, unless you’re going to use this for fx animation and blow it up, you might want the inner faces to be visible.

details

Study your model well and scrutinize every detail. The back wheels of the car are different from the front so I model the different pieces. However, you might want to reuse some parts you already model and reshape them in order to save time. I emphasize heavily on cleanliness of your edges. For hard surfaces, I believe that we try to get most of the models to be a quad surface, however, at times we require to have a 3 or 5 edged polygon which is ok, depending if your model is going to deform or not. Also don’t forget to reverse your normals, centre pivot, freeze transform and delete history. Name all your objects and group them accordingly. Try to make your models easier to work on for the next group of people who are going to work on it if you are working in a pipeline.

Texturing

This model has relatively little texture features, so I just map whatever that will be seen. For this kind of situation we can usually escape with an automatic UV mapping.

uv

I usually delete half of the model and start mapping it. After that mirror your model and flip and sew your UVs back together. The main idea is to figure out how to open up a 3d object in 2d space and try to reduce the amount of islands (Individual UVs not sewn together) as much as possible. You can also take a step further and use set driven key and animate the wheels when you rotate the steering wheels.
