Making of Home Sweet Home
by Iker Cortázar

Through this brief "making of" I will try to explain the process that I used to build my image titled "Home Sweet Home". The whole scene is modeled in Maya and rendered with Mental Ray. I also used Photoshop to create textures, to compose the image and perform some minor retouching.

Before beginning, I knew it clearly that I wanted to make the toucan in a ridiculous cage in which almost could not move and above it had to remove its tip (out of proportion to caricature it a little) by a hole. I like to make the life of this tiny beast more displeased and to create therefore a history around him.

First I look for reference images, in this case particularly for the toucan and the cage. Normally I seek on the Internet, but books also helped me. Once I have the references I make a series of sketches to help me imagine the primary objects of the scene in 3d, and determine the best way to modeling. Many other items, as the "complements" of the scene I created on the spot, i.e. no birth of a closed design.

Modeling

As for the modeling, first of all, I must say that virtually the whole scene is modeled with NURBS. I use another method of modeling if I see clearly that it is best for creating a certain object. This scene is not very complex as far as modeling is concerned. Let me explain how I made some of the objects. The beak of the toucan, for example, is a "loft" of several curves that  are following the form of this one.

To make the cage I used various forms of quite simple  NURBS modeling. The vertical bar of which it hangs the cage, as well as the bars of this one are cylinders nurbs deformed moving distorting points or by means of "bend" and/or "lattice". Of the cage base and, the base the "cover" above of the support supported in the ground, are revolution surfaces.

The lower horizontal bars are created doing extrudes using two curves

The peanuts are made from a NURBS cylinder. Moving points of the cylinder, first I closed both ends giving them a rounded finish, and then gave the form. For the line of the lateral one that excels, I inserted several vertices and I scaled the central points.  Then I gave him a bit of distorting curvature with a "bend". Little bit change the size and curvature, so doesn’t looks duplicate.
