Bloody Checker Texture by Melinda Esponda Diaz

These are the main steps to make a “bloody” checker texture in the freeware software called Mapzone – Powerful Texturing Tool Ever, Download this software now and start working. We’ll go through creation of the diffuse, normal and specular for the texture. We will use a ‘Checker’ Fx-Map as base for this texture (drag and drop it from the left scrolling panel).

We’ll create a ‘Colorize’ filter (equivalent of “Photoshop” gradient replacement) (right click->New Filter->Colorize Map) and we’ll connect the Checker Fx-Map to its input.

Since we are going to create a 1024x1024 texture, we’ll change the node size by right-clicking on the ‘Colorize’ Filter ->’Change size…(Ctrl+T)’, we’ll grab the ‘both’ slider and set both width and height to 1024. We’ll also check the ‘Default’ option. Now, every node that we’ll create will automatically be of a 1024x1024 size.

Double-clicking on the ‘Colorize’ Filter will allow you to show the texture in the lower panel. Make sure you’re working on this node. (when showed in the lower panel, the box will be lined up in orange, as in Figure 1).

By double-clicking on the ‘Colorize’ input (white triangle), we open the ‘Transformation tools’ panel, as asked, we’ll click to display the numeric entries.

‘Transformation tools’ panel offers basic transformations as Pan, Rotate, Scale and Shear. You can use them by typing the values or by using the right buttons, which are shortcuts to apply the most frequent transformations. We are going to use the ‘Scale’ parameter, we’ll set it Up to 200%. (figure 2)

By doing that, we can observe that our Checker is now a 4x4 tiles one. We’ll narrow the ‘Colorize’ Filter gradient keys (Figure 3) in order to have a grid-like texture.

We’ll get rid of the sharp effect by putting it through a ‘Uniform Blur’ (at a very light level).

By linking the ‘Uniform Blur’ to a ‘Fx Filter to Fx-Map’, we can now use it as a ‘Colorize + blend’ input. (Figure 4)
