Digital Double - Denzel Washington Head Study by Nicolas Collings, Belgium Web: http://sillord.free.fr

Introduction

Hi. My name is Nicolas Collings. I was born in 1983 and I currently live in Belgium. I made this model for the challenge “Take2: Celebrity Head Sculpt“ at subdivisionmodeling.com. This was my first real attempt at doing a digital double so I learnt a lot doing this challenge. I completed this piece in one week, working approximately 2 hours every evening after working-days. The week-end before I started this model, I had watched “Man on Fire”, one of my favourite movies. Denzel Washington is just amazing in it. That’s why I decided to choose him as my celebrity head.

Reference

It’s really important to get good reference pictures. Without it, it will become very difficult to achieve a good likeness. The first steps were taken at google.com. I started looking for references/photos of Denzel Washington. After a few minutes I realized that if I wanted good ref the best way would be to grab the DVD of “Man of Fire” and take some screenshot myself. It’s obviously the best way to have references without discrepancies between them.

One important thing: if you decide to take it from Google, make sure to choose the images of when he is more or less the same age. As you know the face changes through the years, so it makes no sense to take one picture of him when he was 35 and another when he is 50 years old.

When I had enough refs I could begin the modeling process.

Base Cage

The second step consists in creating the base cage. You can do it in any 3d application of your choice. I used 3dsmax. You have to keep in mind that your geometry has to remain all quad and fairly low (+-500 polys). The polygons should also be evenly spaced, that way you will preserve a same level of detail all over the model when you'll subdivide your geometry inside Mudbox.
