Making of Child's Nightmare by Maciej Kotlinski, Poland

And here are settings of hair material. I used here blend texture with map input set to “alpha” to make hair ends sharp. As you see – hair have a little transparency applied to the whole length to avoid hay-looking material. I also used colour blend to make hair darker close to head to simulate higher density.

For boy, pyjama and teddy bear I've created colour, bump and specular maps. While painting boys face I used photo reference and with clone tool and smooth brush I covered it with patches from my photo reference. Other details were simply painted on different layers. Bump and specular were created on base of colour texture, with some corrections and additional details.

For boy’s material I used SSS which is new feature in blender. I set it’s values very low. SSS settings in blender are dependent on object’s size, so I marked how big is boy’s face.

To texture teddy bear and pyjama I used photos from great Mayang's Free Textures Library to create base patterns (again – I've ignored parts that are not seen) and painted additional wrinkles on pyjama’s bump map and some stains and abrasions on both pyjama's and teddy bear colour and specular maps.
