Making of Nightmare of Chef by Stoffel Gaetan, Vietnam



Hello, in this tutorial, I’ll explain you the different step of my second prize winning entry for the CGArena wonderful challenge called nightmare and sponsored by various companies like Pixologic, Skymatter, Hyperfocal Design, Daz3d, ambientLight, 3d.sk and many others.

Idea and Sketch

The topic was nightmare so I decide to go for a cartoon style, with strong expression on the character face helping me to tell the story. I quickly arrive to a carrot nightmare idea, probably come from the entire Ratatouille trailer I was watching...

Crazy cooker, cute carrot, strong camera angle, lets model this entire little world!



Environment

As usual, for a scene illustration , I begin by the environment , modeling each single element then add them in the main max scene file when they are done, this way give me the opportunity to concentrate on every single object.

I used edit poly, loft and edge extrude for the complicate one, basic object and spline for some more simple shaped. For the texturing I used a lot of photos reference that I modified after to give a cartoon/ warm feeling, just try to get close enough from my reference to make the object believable.
