The first thing I did was to apply the light in a very general way. I put 3 lights: one practically frontal, one strong white light on the right side and very little saturated blue on the left side, more subtle. I began detailing the face because this is where I wanted the viewer to fix his gaze. I continue the detailing, but this time the body, with special interest in anatomy and skin texture.
I gradually added the details on clothes and hair until it looks like the below animated picture (Sequence 4).
Step 5 - Now it was time to add a feline pattern to our Jake. I lowered the opacity of the layer where the character was and I painted with flat colors and a hard brush and a flat blue over the skin trying to follow the muscle’s shapes.
Next I added a layer mask to the folder containing this layer to hide the pattern in places that had more light, then I did the darker edge of the pattern, duplicating the layer and applying a stroke of 10px and reducing the fill opacity to 0%. Once done I put the general pattern layer mode too hard light and 47% opacity and the edge to overlay mode to and 19% opacity.
