Step 4: In order to separate the foreground from the background more and to create depth, I have given the objects in the foreground more contrast and darken, and lighten up the background behind the robot. It helps to look at the picture with only 70 pixels high to find out the best contrast.
Step 5: Here I added my colors. Cold blue on the left and for the background and red fire from the right. I often use a lot of Fill Layer "Color balance" with Layer Masks in Photoshop. Only when the background is done, I can continue painting with the metal on the robot, because the colors and surrounding is relevant to paint a realistic shiny metal. The environment should reflect on the metal like a mirror.
Step 6: Later I made the metal more matt on some positions (with the standard "Chalko" brush in Photoshop and some metal textures). Now the surface looks slightly rusty.
Added the laser beams, some bumps and different big eyes to let him look crazier.
Step 7: In the last step I changed the format to DIN A4, and added some details like the skull on the ground, an ammo belt below the head, another robot left behind, some fire sparks from the right... and the image is done.
