Lighting and Rendering
I wanted the scene to look like a shot from a high seas adventure, with our pirates looking towards the horizon as they sail to dangerous and exciting places. So I used a cam angle slightly looking up with a low horizon and lots of sky as background.
For the lighting I used one main 'Sun' and a bunch of light blue fill lights. The 'Sun' was attached to a mentalray physical light. Since I had to do a print rez render, I decided to use classical lighting only and no FG/GI. This way I could get a final render much faster and have better control over everything.
I usually do 2 or 3 lighting tests till I get exactly the look I'm going for. The first few I did were too cold and harsh and not in keeping with the 'toon' theme. So I went with much warmer and softer lighting in the end. Note that I have left one character untextured to better see the lighting.
Finally I set up and rendered out 3 passes: Beauty, Ambient Occlusion and Depth at 2400x3200, TGA files with alpha
