Making of Veggie Pirates by

Composite

I imported the 3 passes into Photoshop and drag + dropped them into one single file as 3 layers. Then I took the AO layer and used the Hue/Sat control of photoshop to color it a dull blue-black. I never use pure black in my AO layer cause when you multiply any render with black, it tends to become all muddy and dirty. Using blue instead makes the shadows richer which is exactly what you need to get that colorful toon look. I also used the curve tool on it to get good shadows and still have enough brightness in the scene.

Then I took the Depth layer, used the levels tool to adjust its range and copied it as an alpha to the Beauty layer. This is necessary as the blur filter we are going to use next, requires the depth info to be stored in the layer alpha. Now i used the Lens Blur filter and adjusted the parameters till i got a nice subtle DoF with some grain.

I got a nice looking sky from my collection and adjusted it to better match the image. I isolated some of the cloud shadows so as to better control their look in my scene. I also added a slight 'haze' layer as a screen over the pic to simulate distance fog.

Finally i did some minor color tweaking using Hue/Sat and color balance and exported as a JPEG at 95% compression. Hope you like the explanation of techniques used in the image. If you have any query then don't hesitate to mail me.
